Animals in the Rainforest have evolved in order to survive living in their area. A good example of this is the Sloth. These are herbivores that live in trees (arboreal). They are characterized by their slow movement and non-violent nature. Sloths serve as home for dozens of species of insects and certain kinds of mosses and vegetation. This is called symbiosis; when two organisms depend on one another. There is a special relationship with moths. They provide them with shelter and nutrients, their excrement provides them a place to lay eggs. In return, moths fertilize the algae living in their fur and provides them with nutrients. This symbiotic relationship allows the sloths to merge into the colors of the jungle for camouflage. They have developed sharp, long claws for a better grip on tree trunks. Since they move so slow, their only food source is something that moves even slower: plants. Their stomachs can digest animals but it is very improbable that they catch any. They have very long tongues that can help them reach leaves far away. Sloths can smell so bad predators won't try to hunt them. They can take up to a year to find a partner to reproduce with because of their speed. They are not in the verge of extinction, however, because they have adapted to the rainforest very well. |
